Rain, Rain, Go Ye Away

By Dad on general — 8:44 pm

Today, we actually got some of that weather business that some of you people have in other parts of the country. It hasn’t rained here in months, and today on my way out of work, I heard thunder, and actually saw a couple streaks of lighting on the way home. Back in the midwest, a good thunderstorm was something we used to see a few times a month during the summer months. Out here in southern California, there just isn’t any weather, least of all the dramatic sort we had back east. When I arrived home, it was just starting to rain, and Anna was out on the driveway, dancing around Gene Kelly-style

In other news, I made most of a week’s worth of food yesterday in order to save some time during the week. While making sauteed salmon with a moscato beurre blanc, I simultaneously made chicken soup for chicken & dumplings, and shrimp risotto. Yay me.

About 2:00am we had probably the coolest thunderstorm we have had in my 10 years in southern California. The house shook; car alarms were going off. Flashes of lightning lit up every inch of our bedroom. I even turned off my server machine in case there was an electrical surge. Jen and I were discussing what to do if Anna woke up and was frightened–should we let her come into our room? Should one of us stay with her? Luckily both girls slept right through it without a peep. I’m glad that the power stayed on; I’m sure a loss of the night light is something she would not sleep through.

I talked with Anna this morning and she did in fact wake up last night; she said she saw flashes and heard crashing. She was also afraid that our house would burn down because it sounded like all the other houses burned down. She was a real trooper, as we didn’t hear a peep out of her. Anna says that the storm should be ashamed of itself for waking us up, and if she saw it again, she would call it a toodle-head pooty-butt.
